Any other older writers just starting out feel like they missed the boat to get started on a career as a writer freelance or otherwise because of age? Or is it just me?

I considered writing seriously at different stages of existence, but nothing came of it.
I'm most particular about the ethics involved in writing. I worry if I actually publish my work, it may be misconstrued for what I intend it to be.
Also, nowadays it's not too difficult to get yourself self-published with the technology we have today.
There are just so many writers and writings out there.
